Their training took place in the base of the Special Forces Unit \u201cBars\u201d, which participated against the Maidan protestors. The first weeks were described by volunteers as the worst days of their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite limited resources and many soldiers lacking basic protective gear, such as bulletproof vests and helmets, and heavier equipment, including anti-tank weapons like RPGs, they were successful in completing many combat tasks. They were praised by regular soldiers from other units of the Ukrainian Military for their achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the command of Major General Serhii Kulchytskyi, the battalion&#8217;s personnel were among the first to deploy to eastern Ukraine, blocking enemy forces in the Slovyansk area, with its reconnaissance groups restoring the Ukrainian flag over the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commander, Kulchytskyi, was tragically killed on May 29, 2014, in Slovyansk after the Mi-8 helicopter he was being transported in, was shot down by self-proclaimed pro-Russian separatists near Mount Karachun. In his honor, the battalion was named after him to keep his memory alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unit&#8217;s soldiers also fought through intense battles in the Debaltseve direction, ensuring the withdrawal of Ukrainian Forces, and holding positions in the areas of Stanytsia, Luhanska, and Popasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the unit participated in the defense of Kyiv Oblast. After the clearing of the region and the Kyiv Campaign crawling to an end, the unit was redeployed to eastern Ukraine, participating in counteroffensive operations in late 2022, together with units of the Air Assault Forces, liberating Lyman, Sviatohirsk, and Yarova.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, the battalion carried out combat missions in the Bakhmut direction, the hottest direction at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2023, the battalion joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ua\/ukraine\/national-guard\/bureviy-brigade\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"17478\">\u0411\u0443\u0440\u0435\u0432\u0456\u0439 \u0431\u0440\u0438\u0433\u0430\u0434\u0430<\/a> of the Ukrainian National Guard<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">\u00a0and later joined the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ua\/ukraine\/national-guard\/khartia-brigade\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u0425\u0430\u0440\u0442\u0456\u044f \u0411\u0440\u0438\u0433\u0430\u0434\u0430<\/a><\/span> \u0432 \u0440\u0430\u043c\u043a\u0430\u0445 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0435\u043a\u0442\u0443 <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ua\/ukraine\/offensive-guard\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"17463\">\u041d\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0443\u043f\u0430\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0430 \u0433\u0432\u0430\u0440\u0434\u0456\u044f<\/a> program. The new formation will include three assault companies, a sniper unit, and various support elements, including a dedicated drone team. Leadership positions at the company and platoon levels are currently being filled from among the unit\u2019s experienced soldiers. Additionally, a team of instructors is being assembled from the battalion's veterans to train incoming recruits. Their combat training and coordination were led by Major General Serhiy Kulchytsky.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In April 2014, 300 of these reservists took the oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people, forming the 1st Reserve Battalion before deploying to eastern Ukraine. The following month, another 270 volunteers completed their training, forming the 2nd Reserve Battalion. They departed for eastern Ukraine on the same day a Ukrainian Mi-8 helicopter carrying Major General Serhiy Kulchytsky was shot down near Slovyansk. It contributed to the liberation of Lyman, Sviatohirsk, and Yarova, and later fought in the Bakhmut direction.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In March 2023, the battalion joined the Bureviy Brigade, and was later incorporated into the Khartia Brigade.
