From the outset, the formation was planned as a permanent component of the corps rather than a temporarily attached unit for operational purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading88557_53902b-b6, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading88557_53902b-b6[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading88557_53902b-b6\"]{font-style:normal;}.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading88557_53902b-b6 mark.kt-highlight, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading88557_53902b-b6[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading88557_53902b-b6\"] mark.kt-highlight{font-style:normal;color:#f76a0c;-webkit-box-decoration-break:clone;box-decoration-break:clone;padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px;}<\/style>\n<h2 class=\"kt-adv-heading88557_53902b-b6 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading88557_53902b-b6\">Preliminary Context<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The formation is part of a process that began several months ago, when former Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko announced that the two combat corps of the Ukrainian National Guard would receive additional combat units, including an Assault Regiment and an Unmanned Systems Regiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 31, 2026, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/units\/first-national-guard-assault-regiment-formed\/\">MilitaryLand<\/a><\/em> reported on the formation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/national-guard\/23rd-assault-regiment\/\">23rd Assault Regiment<\/a> under the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/national-guard\/2nd-khartia-corps\/\">2nd Khartia Corps<\/a>. The regiment was formed on the basis of the 4th Operational Battalion of the Khartia Brigade, which had also served as the brigade&#8217;s dedicated International Battalion and included many foreign volunteers, predominantly from South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-militaryland-net wp-block-embed-militaryland-net\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Ja4Mxqe8py\"><a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ua\/units\/first-national-guard-assault-regiment-formed\/\">First National Guard Assault Regiment Formed<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cFirst National Guard Assault Regiment Formed\u201d \u2014 MilitaryLand.net\" src=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ua\/units\/first-national-guard-assault-regiment-formed\/embed\/#?secret=rtRon53gOE#?secret=Ja4Mxqe8py\" data-secret=\"Ja4Mxqe8py\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading88557_586a15-8c, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading88557_586a15-8c[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading88557_586a15-8c\"]{font-style:normal;}.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading88557_586a15-8c mark.kt-highlight, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading88557_586a15-8c[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading88557_586a15-8c\"] mark.kt-highlight{font-style:normal;color:#f76a0c;-webkit-box-decoration-break:clone;box-decoration-break:clone;padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px;}<\/style>\n<h2 class=\"kt-adv-heading88557_586a15-8c wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading88557_586a15-8c\">Formation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 2026, the commander of the 1st Azov Corps, Brigadier General <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/commanders\/denis-prokopenko\/\">Denys Prokopenko<\/a>, revealed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pravda.com.ua\/columns\/2026\/05\/27\/8036556\/\">column published by Ukrainska Pravda<\/a> that several new formations were being established within the corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These included an Artillery Brigade, later known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/national-guard\/harmash-brigade\/\">Harmash Brigade<\/a>; an Unmanned Systems Regiment, later known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/national-guard\/pilum-regiment\/\">Pilum Regiment<\/a>; a Special Purpose Detachment, later known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/national-guard\/tuman-special-purpose-detachment\/\">Tuman Detachment<\/a>; as well as logistical support units, a Medical Battalion, and the 14th Assault Regiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the announcement, several recruitment websites, including LobbyX, a popular recruitment platform used by military units across the Ukrainian Defense Forces, published vacancies specifically for the <strong>14th Assault Regiment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>MilitaryLand<\/em> later learned that the unit was initially intended to carry the <strong>14th Assault Regiment<\/strong> designation but was subsequently redesignated as the <strong>52nd Assault Regiment<\/strong> for unknown reasons. It was also confirmed that the regiment would be formed on the basis of the <strong>3rd International Battalion of the Azov Brigade<\/strong>, also known as <strong>Azov International<\/strong>. This connection was later corroborated by recruitment publications on the <a href=\"https:\/\/lobbyx.army\/regiments\/14-shturmovyi-polk\/\">LobbyX platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading88557_03dece-85, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading88557_03dece-85[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading88557_03dece-85\"]{font-style:normal;}.wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading88557_03dece-85 mark.kt-highlight, .wp-block-kadence-advancedheading.kt-adv-heading88557_03dece-85[data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading88557_03dece-85\"] mark.kt-highlight{font-style:normal;color:#f76a0c;-webkit-box-decoration-break:clone;box-decoration-break:clone;padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px;}<\/style>\n<h2 class=\"kt-adv-heading88557_03dece-85 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading88557_03dece-85\">About the 3rd International Battalion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/national-guard\/3rd-international-battalion\/\">3rd International Battalion<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/national-guard\/azov-brigade\/\">Azov Brigade<\/a>, also known as Azov International, was formed on December 23, 2024, when it was publicly revealed that the brigade had begun accepting foreign volunteers into its ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-militaryland-net wp-block-embed-militaryland-net\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"BA7Y18hWD8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ua\/news\/azov-brigade-forms-an-international-battalion\/\">Azov Brigade Forms International Battalion<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cAzov Brigade Forms International Battalion\u201d \u2014 MilitaryLand.net\" src=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ua\/news\/azov-brigade-forms-an-international-battalion\/embed\/#?secret=gCzjqhodiZ#?secret=BA7Y18hWD8\" data-secret=\"BA7Y18hWD8\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The battalion was formed from Ukrainian personnel from the brigade&#8217;s Training Battalion, as well as a group of foreign volunteers who had previously fought with the brigade&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/national-guard\/1st-special-purpose-battalion\/\">1st Special Purpose Battalion<\/a> since 2024. Its first commander was Lieutenant Colonel <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/commanders\/yuri-chekh\/\">Yuriy Chekh<\/a>, callsign &#8220;Karl.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The battalion recruited foreigners from more than forty countries, with many coming from Western Europe and North America. yellow-and-blue colors of the Azov Brigade with the pastel yellow-and-black color scheme of the 1st Azov Corps. The interior features flames surrounding two crossed daggers, while the regiment&#8217;s nickname appears at the top of the chevron. Below the daggers is the iconic <strong>Idea of the Nation<\/strong> symbol, closely associated with the Azov movement and Ukrainian nationalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The expansion of the 3rd International Battalion into a fully fledged International Assault Regiment marks a new chapter for foreign volunteers within the 1st Azov Corps. As a regiment-sized formation, the unit is likely to receive additional personnel, heavier weaponry, and greater operational responsibilities as part of the defense of the Dobropillia sector in eastern Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More broadly, the role of foreign volunteers within Ukraine&#8217;s Defense Forces continues to expand as their integration into established Ukrainian formations
