Ukrainian Marines Reform Coastal Defense Brigades

The Ukrainian Marine Corps, operating under the Ukrainian Navy, has announced a comprehensive reform process affecting all coastal defense brigades under its command — namely the 34th, 39th, and 40th Coastal Defense Brigades.

All three formations were established just over a year ago. They originated from two Territorial Defense Brigades and one Mechanized Brigade that had been transferred to the 30th Marine Corps and subsequently reorganized. The 40th Coastal Defense Brigade, formed on the basis of the 150th Mechanized Brigade, became the first coastal defense brigade created within the Ukrainian Armed Forces since 2015.

At the time of their formation, these brigades were widely assessed as hybrid structures, combining elements of mechanized and marine units. Their role appeared primarily defensive, with a focus on protecting critical infrastructure and maintaining security along riverine and coastal lines.

Restructuring

On March 1, 2026, all three brigades were officially redesignated as Marine Brigades, increasing the total number of active Marine Brigades from four to seven. The Marines outlined that the doctrines of these units have now changed.

Marine Brigade’s are often associated with being rapid-response forces and designed for offensive amphibious assault operations, in contrast to Coastal Defense Brigades. In practice, however, under conditions of active combat, Coastal Defense Brigades often perform missions on par with Marines. According to the announcement, these units have already proven in battle that they deserve Marine status.

With immediate effect, it was stated that these brigade’s would expand their personnel structure, creating more positions and opportunities within the brigade, and undergo certain changes with their armament and training. Soldiers of these brigade’s would now also undergo preparation for specialized, amphibious assault operations, ranging from landing from ships, boats, and helicopters, and greater training in crossing water obstacles.

The insignia depicts a chevron bearing the distinctive colors of the Ukrainian Marines. At its center is a stylized depiction of what appears to be a Lynx’s head, rendered in a grey-silver tone. The animal is portrayed with an aggressive, combat expression, and has sharp fangs with flared fur.
